The parents of a young woman in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State have asked the guardians of the bridegroom who will tie the knot with their daughter to return the N1,000 and N5,000 bills they took as dowry.
The source of Focus News Hausa, Aminiya found out that the groom's parents have taken an undisclosed amount of money as dowry and other purchases in preparation for the ceremony.
Although the ceremony was not postponed, the bride's parents complained that they did not need to spend all the money before the 31st of January, the deadline given by the CBN was no longer applicable, and they did not have a bank account. they will pour them in.
That is why they refused to accept the old money, with the need to give them new ones if the marriage is to be done.
A brother of the groom explained that, "We took the money to the house of the bride that our brother is planning to marry, but they called me on Sunday and asked us to come and collect the money until we get the new documents to bring the money."
"They said they have nowhere to take the old ones, so we will return them until we get new ones," he said.
He also said that many people are waiting to collect the money in the area because they are afraid that they will not be able to spend it before the deadline of the CBN.
Aminiya found out that some traders in some villages of Niger State have already started to stop accepting the old money or stop their business at a time when banks are still issuing the old money.
When our correspondent visited some villages and small towns in the state, he found out that most of them do not even have banks.
