He was once sentenced to death as a result of a coup attempt but before the execution of Abacha's sentence, he died.
General Oladipo Diya died on Sunday night at a hospital in Lagos at the age of 78.
The deceased's eldest son, Oyesinmilola Diya, announced the death.
Oladipo Diya was born in Odogbolu town in Ogun state on April 3, 1944.
During the military rule of General Muhammadu Buhari, he was the governor of Ogun state from January 1984 to August 1985.
He then became the Chief of the Army Staff of Nigeria before moving on to become Vice President General Sani Abacha.
