President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the candidate of his party, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for winning this year's presidential election in a speech by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, today Wednesday.
Reacting to the results of the presidential election and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu announced this morning, President Buhari said: "I congratulate the honorable Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. He was elected by the people, he is the most suitable person for this job. I will now work with him and his team to ensure a smooth transition."
According to the president: “The election is the biggest democratic exercise in Africa. In a region that has experienced setbacks and military coups in recent years, this election shows how democracy continues to be relevant and able to move its people forward.
"In Nigeria, the results show how democracy has started to grow in our country. Never before has an electoral map changed so much in one round. In the presidential elections, states in all regions across the country changed colors. Some of you may have noticed that my state was one of them. The successful candidate also did not win his home state. This is happening during a very competitive election. Votes and those who voted cannot be taken lightly. Each must be found. Competition is good for our democracy. There is no doubt that what the people chose was given to them in the results we got today.
I know some politicians and candidates will not agree with this idea. That's good too. If any candidate believes that he can prove the fraud that he says has been done to him, then bring us the evidence. If they can't, then we have to conclude that the election must be the opinion of the people - no matter how hard those who failed will suffer before they accept it. If they feel there is a need to challenge the results of the election, please take it to court, not on the streets.
