Here are some statistics about Sudan

Sudan, once the largest and most ethnically divided country in Africa, split into two countries in July 2011, after the people of the southern part of the country voted for independence.

Sudan's government has blessed the independence of South Sudan, where the majority of Christians and traditionalists have spent decades fighting against the rule of Arab Muslims from the north.

However, even then, some issues have not been resolved - especially regarding how to share the oil wealth and demarcation of the border - issues that continue to cause tension between the two neighboring countries.

Conflict has been plaguing Sudan for a long time.

Two civil wars between north and south have killed one and a half million people - and the ongoing war in Darfur has displaced two million people and killed more than 200,000.
