Obasanjo requested the British court to reduce ekweremadu's sentence
The former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo has written to the court officials in the UK, where he needs to be lenient when sentencing the Nigerian senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife after they were arrested for the crime of 'trafficking human body parts.'
Last month, the court found Senator Ike Ekweremadu, 60 years old, his wife Beatrice, and a doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, guilty of taking a 21-year-old man from Lagos to the UK to remove his kidney, so that it could be given to his daughter Ekweremadu, named Sonia, 25 years old.
In the letter written by Obasanjo, he said what the couple did was wrong and no society would condone doing that.
However, he asked the court to look into the situation of the senator whose health is in danger and who wants urgent medical help to relieve him.
Obasanjo also told the court that it should look at Ekweremadu's good morals at the time of sentencing him.
However, there is no guarantee that even the letter written by Obasanjo will be effective.
The former president did not say that he was speaking with the Nigerian government.
Senator Ekweremadu and his wife are being held in British custody until May 5 when he will be sentenced, the first time that someone has been sentenced under the prohibition of modern slavery.
