Ortom praised Buhari for raising the count
Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue state in central Nigeria, praised President Muhammadu Buhari for putting off the 2023 census, which he said showed that Buhari was listening to the people's complaints.
Governor Ortom asked the federal government in the middle of this month to put off the census until there is peace and safety in the country.
In a statement released by the governor's media adviser, Terver Akase, the governor said that the census would be unfair to the millions of people who have been displaced by the war and are living in refugee camps in the state and across the country.
Governor Ortom praised the move to cancel the census and said, "Now that the census has been canceled, the federal government should try to get the towns and people back from the bandits who took them."
He also said that the people's lives and well-being must come before everything the country wants to do to help its people grow.
After meeting with the President of the country, Muhammadu Buhari, at his office on Friday night, the National Census Commission said on Saturday morning that the census would not happen.
The statement didn't say why the census had to be put on hold four days before it was supposed to start.
President Buhari told the agency to keep working on the programs it had already started for the 2023 census. This was done so that the work already done wouldn't be wasted and the next government would have the information it needed to make it easier for them to reach the plan's goals.
Preparing for this big project has cost a lot of money and taken a long time.
No one knows for sure when the next census will take place in Nigeria, but in theory, it should have been done seven years ago.
