The first Muslim has been sworn in as the head of Scotland

Humza Yousaf was sworn in as the leader of the Scottish region in a lavish ceremony in Edinburgh.

Humza became the first Muslim to hold this position.

He was elected by the Scottish Parliament as the leader of the region in a session held on Tuesday.

The new leader of the SNP has become the first person from an ethnic minority to lead a government after winning a majority of the vote.

The leaders of the three opposition parties - Conservative, Labor, and Libs - challenged him in the election.

He will begin forming his government this week, facing opposition leaders for the first time in a question-and-answer session on Thursday.

Mr. Yousaf won the SNP leadership on Monday with 26,032 votes, beating Kate Forbes who got 23,890 votes and Ash Regan who came third.

Mr. Yousaf was the Health Secretary for Scotland before this election.

Despite the heated campaign, where Ms Forbes was seen criticizing Mr Yousaf's qualifications in a televised debate, all the defeated candidates congratulated the new leader on his victory, urging the party she would have united to support him.

Speaking to ITV after his victory, he described himself as a lucky man, assuring the public that he will work hard to bring development to the region.

He also said that he will lead a campaign to ensure that the region gains independence.

He added that "the people of Scotland want independence now, and we will be the ones to take the lead in making sure it happens."

Mr. Yousaf also said that he will ask the British government to allow the referendum to be held immediately in the country.

Downing Street has already said that it will not change its position on opposing the referendum, with the Prime Minister's spokesman saying that he will focus on issues that are important to the public, such as reducing inflation and addressing the cost of living in the country.

Who is Humza Yousaf?

His father is a native of Pakistan, where he moved to Scotland with his family in the 1960s. His mother was born in Kenya.

Mr. Yousaf has often spoken about the racism he faced.

Mr. Yousaf attended Hutcheson School in Glasgow.

He then went to Glasgow City University, where he studied politics.

He worked for a short time in a telephone office before becoming an assistant to SNP MP Bashir Ahmad and Alex Salmond in the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Yousaf was elected as an MP for Glasgow in 2011, where Mr Salmond later raised his mantle to Minister for Europe and Overseas Development.

He became Minister for Transport in 2016, making him the first person from a minority ethnic group to be elected to the Scottish Parliament.
