China Starts First Ocean Carbon Storage Project

The first carbon storage facility in the South China Sea went into operation on Thursday, according to a statement from the National Oil Corporation of China (CNOOC).

The project, according to the corporation, aims to prevent nearly 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of growing 14 million trees.

According to the scientific technique, the project gathers and treats carbon dioxide from oil wells before injecting it into the ocean at a depth of roughly 800 meters, about 3 kilometers from the platform.

The project's execution demonstrates China's accomplishment in acquiring comprehensive technologies and apparatuses to gather, regulate, inject, store, and even manage carbon dioxide in the water.

The corporation claims that China's efforts to meet its objective of lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon dioxide parity by 2060 have now begun a new chapter of success. Ibrahim is the translator.
