A Kenyan set himself on fire because of the high cost of living
The United Nations human rights official expressed deep concern for the people of Niger, who he said will face more hardships as a result of the coup d'état in the country last month.
Volker Türk called on the ruling army to quickly restore democracy in the country.
He said that in a country where almost half of its people are suffering from poverty, the situation is now worse because of the closure of borders, the suspension of business activities, the cutting of electricity and the increase in food prices.
His words come as the meeting of the chief security officers of West Africa in Ghana enters its second day which is looking at the possibility of taking military action to restore democracy if the diplomatic method works.
