 Congo has denied claims of a coup attempt in the country

The Congo-Brazzaville government has denied reports of a coup attempt against President Denis Nguesso, who has been in power for 39 years.

This follows unconfirmed reports on social media that the military is trying to topple the 79-year-old president, who is currently in New York to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly.

"The government denies this fake news," said Information Minister Thierry Moungalla on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

"We confirm the public's opinion about the stability that reigns and call on people to continue their work in peace and tranquility."

The country's government also published a statement denying the reports showing the coup attempt on its website.

In recent months, there have been coups in Africa, with the most recent coup in neighboring Gabon in January.

President Nguesso came to power in the country in a military coup in 1979.
