 Demonstrators blame the authorities for the terrible floods in Libya

Hundreds of residents of the city of Derna in eastern Libya on Monday staged a protest against the local authorities, more than a week after floods killed thousands of people in the city.

Demonstrators have criticized the speaker of the country's eastern parliament, Aguila Saleh, and the authorities, blaming the floods that have killed nearly 4,000 people, according to UN figures.

In a joint statement, the protesters said they want an immediate investigation into the flood and legal action against the leaders involved.

They also demanded compensation and reconstruction of Derna.

Experts also stated that the lack of maintenance of the city's dams by the authorities caused them to burst and release water.

The protesters also burned the house of the mayor of Derna, Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi.

The Prime Minister of Libya, Osama Hammad, has already suspended Mr. Ghaithi along with other officials of the local government of Derna.
