 UNGA: The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo and his delegation arrived at the 78th UNGA

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo led the Ghanaian delegation to the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations which is taking place at the headquarters of the Assembly in New York City, USA.

Debate began at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today Tuesday with the title: Rebuilding Trust and Enhancing International Cooperation; Take more action on the 2030 agenda and the goals of sustainable development, peace, prosperity, and progress for all.

President Akufo-Addo will address the National Assembly on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. He is expected to use this opportunity to highlight the steps his government is taking to implement all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, and the country's efforts to revive its economy that has deteriorated due to the epidemic of COVID-19, and the war between Russia and Ukraine.

An analyst on politics and current affairs, Yunus Swalahudeen Wakpenjo, hopes that President Akufo-Addo will explain the problems faced by the people of Ghana before the Parliament whether the country receives financial support or advice.

"We hope that he will tell the truth about the situation in Ghana, in terms of security, economy and the struggle of the citizens. There is a need for President Akufo-Addo to explain all the problems to the parliament or the country will get support."

Global warming is one of the main issues to be discussed at the conference, especially now that the world is moving from 2.6 to 2.8 degrees Centigrade of temperature at the end of the 21st century, and the purpose of the United Nations is to find ways for world leaders they will work to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees centigrade. With political intent, the United Nations is confident that the goal can be achieved, but much work is needed.

The Deputy Director of Research at the Center for Climate Change and Food Supply, Mohammed Jafaru Dankwabia, said he would like President Akufo-Addo to present the problems of the influx of refugees from neighboring countries that are in conflict related to global warming.

Jafar added that President Akufo-Addo must explain to the parliament the internal problems, especially in terms of drought and floods that have caused farmers to lose their way of getting their food.

And the issue of illegal mining (commonly known as Galamsey in Ghana), which contributes to climate change, is a problem that the President should explain where the fight against this issue has been taken.

President Akufo-Addo was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and officials from the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is expected to return home on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, and the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will act on his behalf, as stipulated in Article 60 (8) of the Constitution.
