The Zamfara state government has said that at least 10 policemen have been arrested who are suspected of killing an Islamic teacher in Zamfara state.
On Tuesday, Sheikh Abubakar Hassan was brutally murdered and the police are suspected of involvement in the incident that happened in Gusau Local Government.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the Zamfara governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris stated that the suspects arrested by the authorities were patrols and not the state soldiers who were deployed recently.
"The Zamfara state government has learned of the tragic killing of Sheikh Abubakar Hassan Mada in Mada town. It is a sad thing that could have been prevented from happening.
"The security forces have arrested all the patrolmen suspected of being involved in this heinous incident. We want to clarify further that the patrolmen suspected of involvement in the killing have nothing to do with Zamfara State soldiers." as stated in the announcement.
The government said that the results of the initial investigation by the police showed that one of the arrested policemen was a former student of the teacher who was killed. The information will help the authorities to understand the situation and take appropriate measures.
According to the government, it will present the results of the police investigation once it is completed.
She also sent a message of condolence to the teacher's family and the people of Mada town.
