 The Gambia parliament is considering how to ban female genital mutilation

A member of parliament has introduced a resolution seeking to ban female genital mutilation before the Gambia parliament.

It was in 2015 that female circumcision was banned in the country where most of its people are Muslims when Yahya Jammeh was the president.

However, prominent Islamic scholars have been calling for the ban to be repealed while women's rights groups have vowed to continue fighting to see the law remain in place.

Mr Jammeh's rule came to an end in 2016 after 22 years on the throne.

More than three-quarters of Gambian women between the ages of 15 and 49 have been circumcised, according to the United Nations.

Followers of a famous teacher, Abdoulie Fatty, showed their support for the resolution shortly after it was presented in the parliament.
