Real Madrid had decided to award Kylian Mbappe with the very prestigious number 10 jersey next season, 2025/26.
This is part of the new history of the French star in the career at Bernabeu, which started one year ago.
After joining last summer, Mbappe was due to take the number but the last minute renewal of contract by Luka Modric saw the Croatian magician retain the number. Mbappe decided to take number 9 shirt, however, already player and club agreed to change it since Modric is coming to AC Milan.
On another hand, ESPN argues that commercial factors also persuade the decision, given the fact that Mbappe happens to be the number 10 talent in France.
The international appeal that Mbappe has in wearing the most iconic number in the club is likely to increase the sale of shirts and the overall interaction with the fan base at the club at Real Madrid.
Other talents who were mentioned as possible new owners of the shirt are Arda Guler and young Argentine sensation Franco Mastantuono; both are not as powerful as a star like Mbappe.
Since Rodrygo is explosive but has an uncertain future and may possibly leave the club in the near future, the new number belonging to Mbappe may suggest a restructuring of the attacking order.
As much as the No. 10 shirt is an indication of a new chapter, it also covers the No. 9 jersey.
As there are no marquee centre-forwards in sight, new talents Gonzalo Garcia Torres and Endrick Felipe will be called into the fray.
Nevertheless, they are both not the type of Real Madrid number nine they are accustomed to.
