Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard face backlash for 'tone deaf' anniversary post during Domestic Violence Awareness month

Comments on Kristen Bell's recent Instagram post about her and her husband Dax Shepard's 12th wedding anniversary have been limited.

In a post just days after praising their 20-year relationship, Bell is in hot water for downplaying domestic violence in a Friday post.

It's been 12 years since I married the man who told me, "I would never kill you." A lot of men have killed their wives at some point. "I have a lot of reasons to kill you, but I will never do it," Bell wrote the description for the post, which had a picture of her and Shepard hugging.

Fans quickly criticised the post, calling it "tone deaf" and "insensitive" for making silly jokes about violence in a relationship. Someone on Instagram said, "Kristen, you couldn't have posted that during Domestic Violence Awareness Month." Someone else said, "That's... a very weird thing to say."

"I've been a fan for a while," said one person. I just want to ask you not to make fun of domestic violence. Please remember that this is a real problem that many people face every day. And the text could make people feel bad.

"Read the room, hun," said someone else. "That’s offensive."

When Entertainment Weekly asked Bell and Shepard's reps for feedback, they didn't answer right away. Not everyone who saw Bell's post was negative. A lot of fans and friends of the couple liked the joke and said it fit with how funny they are together.

"This is LOVE," Terry Crews, who used to be on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote, adding a heart and a laughing emoji.

The joke that Howie Mandel made about Shepard's love letter was, "He should write for Hallmark."

"You guys are the best," Nouvelle Vague star Zoey Deutch wrote. "That's the most romantic thing I've heard," another friend said.

Bell and Shepard have caused a lot of trouble on social media before. This year, the Parenthood star caused a stir when she shared an NSFW picture of Bell doing yoga in her pants to celebrate being nominated for an Emmy for Nobody Wants This. Some fans were mad, but Bell didn't seem to care and shared the post again on her own page. This new scandal happened just one day after Bell said on the red carpet that she forgot their wedding anniversary.
