SSANU chairman requests FG to release the salaries that had not been released.
Nurudeen Yusuf, the chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian universities (SSANU) at the University of Abuja chapter complains that the federal government is not paying its withheld two months salary.
On October 9, a joint action committee of SSANU at the Non-Academic Staff Unit (NASU) protested in all the federal universities in the country.Speaking on Friday in the Channels TV breakfast show, Yusuf said that the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the federal government to renegotiate the agreement it had with the union in 2009.
This contract is 16 year old, and it is time to renegotiate this contract, yet the government has not renegotiated.
Yusuf urged the government to come in and ensure that the working conditions of its members were better in order to prevent the union to engage in a strike. He said: We will observe how the government will react to our protest yesterday.
It is the start of a new wave of agitations. In case we receive no answer, we are going to engage in what JAC termed as an industrial war.Yusuf lamented how the government has not been sincere enough to address its agitations, and has been promises without action.
We cannot survive on promises anymore because it is not feeding us, he said.
You do not have to establish a committee to remunerate salaries. Enhance staff welfare and working conditions to such an extent that we would be giving the best to the country and I do not believe that is too much of the government.
He advised the government to settle its 25/35 per cent salary arrears in addition to increasing education funding, which have been outstanding since September 2024.
Suppose there is a university having more than forty thousand students and yet accommodation less than five thousand how is the other thirty-five thousand of them going to remain? he asked.
To develop a nation, we should develop education. The higher learning institutions need to be well-financed.
Some of the most urgent requirements of the union according to SSANU chairman included the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, salary arrears of two months, deductions, and the increment of salary arrears to 25/35 per cent.
